Tackling heavy rains: April cleaning, greening, and maintenance achievements in Riverhorse Valley

April brought another month of heavy rainfall to Riverhorse Valley, with 208mm recorded. Despite the persistent wet weather, we are pleased to report no significant infrastructure damage within the precinct. Our cleaning, greening, and maintenance teams worked diligently throughout the month, ensuring the precinct remained clean, green, and well managed, despite the challenges presented by the rain.

Gardening and Landscaping Maintenance
Scheduled gardening and landscaping activities continued across the precinct. The teams focused on verge and garden maintenance, ensuring that public spaces and green areas remained neat and visually appealing. Special attention was given to trimming and maintaining the gardens at Island Circle, as well as pruning back overgrown trees to manage growth accelerated by the wet conditions. The landscaping teams also carried out brush cutting along boundary lines and undertook grass cutting along the freeway edges to maintain clear and tidy verges.

Road and Verge Maintenance
Following the consistent rainfall, particular attention was paid to infrastructure and verge upkeep. The teams worked on sweeping and removing washaways after each rain event, ensuring that roadways remained clean and free from debris. Maintenance also included the repair of signage in Imvubu Park and securing a damaged road barrier, ensuring both visibility and safety within the precinct were preserved.

Rain Management and Washaway Clearing
A major area of focus was the clearing of washaways and debris, particularly along Prince Umhlangane Road, where the uMhlangane River had overflowed onto the roadway. Thanks to quick action from the teams, these washaways were cleared efficiently, minimising disruption and maintaining accessibility throughout the precinct.

Litter Collection and Alien Invasive Control
Our alien invasive control teams remained active throughout April, cutting back vegetation along the two-metre boundary fences and continuing their significant efforts to clean the riverbanks and waterways. This month, a total of 1,560 bags of litter were collected. Given the continued rains, litter collection efforts along the riverbanks will remain a priority until all areas are fully cleared of debris brought down by the water.

Through the dedication of our teams and careful planning, Riverhorse Valley has remained resilient and well cared for during another rainy month. We thank our members for their continued support and cooperation as we work to maintain the high standards of the precinct.
