As we near the upcoming elections on Wednesday, 29th May, and in light of unverified rumors about potential threats during this period, we would like to provide an update on the safety and security preparations in the precinct.
Following discussions with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the precinct security service provider (G4S), no credible intelligence has confirmed these alleged threats. Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, we have ensured that all necessary plans are in place, including the following measures:
Emergency Preparedness – We have emergency response procedures, along with a detailed response plan and contact information, has been established. All security staff members are trained in these response protocols.
Security Coordination – Consultations with G4S have taken place to discuss deployment strategies. Currently, the risk level is assessed as low to medium. The precinct’s operations will be overseen by the existing teams, which include 13 CCTV cameras monitored 24/7 and an armed response team of 2 members. G4S will have additional resources on standby if needed.
Collaboration with SAPS – SAPS and Public Order Policing units will be on standby and deployed if the situation requires.
Enhanced Private Property Security – Property owners are encouraged to conduct internal risk assessments and bolster security measures on their private property as they see fit.
Public Private Partnerships – We have established strong relationships with the Safety and Justice Forum at the Durban Chamber of Commerce. These partnerships provide valuable platforms to engage with law enforcement at high levels, including the Police Provincial Command Centre and the Metro Police Fusion Centre. This collaboration enhances our ability to address security concerns in our precinct effectively.
