A warning has been issued to members of the public and communities surrounding the Umhlangane River to refrain from using the river water.
Due to a technical fault during construction at KwaMashu Waste Water Treatment Works, untreated waste water has been discharged into the Umhlangane River. This has resulted in the river water becoming a health risk should members of the community use or be exposed to it.The eThekweni Municipality (eTM) urges community members not to use the river water for drinking, cooking, swimming and any other purpose until further notice. This applies to the entire section of the Umhlangane River below the KwaMashu treatment works, including where it convergences with the Umgeni River.
